Bi-Wiring Explained
If your speakers allow for bi-wiring, with each channel having two pairs of input terminals, one set for high frequencies, one set for low frequencies, you can take advantage of this optional connection to potentially enhance your system's performance.
Objectively speaking, sonic improvements for bi-wiring result by reducing interference between the musical signal's high and low frequencies, which enhances clarity, detail, and soundstage, by isolating these signal paths. This also reduces crosstalk and lowers cable impedance.
Bi-wire connections can be configured in two ways. A "double bi-wire" uses either two separate pairs of cables connected to two stereo amplifiers (aka bi-amping), or by soldering or otherwise joining two pairs of cables at the amplifier when using a single stereo amplifier or monoblocks. Some amplifiers may have two pairs of output taps, allowing for a double bi-wire connection with a single stereo amp or monoblocks.
If a cable's geometry consists of 4 or more conductors, this allows for what's called an "internally bi-wired" cable with each channel's cable having 2 positive and 2 negative legs configured at the speaker. However, internal bi-wiring, also reduces the gauge of the conductor's connection from amp to speaker, sometimes having a negative impact with full-range speakers in terms of bass performance, dynamics, "weight", and "slam". If a subwoofer is used, this concern is generally mitigated.
Although benefits can be subtle and are debated, many audiophiles choose to take advantage of this option if their speakers allow. Perhaps most importantly, bi-wiring removes the stock bi-wire jumpers from the signal chain. These jumpers are usually made from rigid brass material which has a negative impact on high and mid-range frequencies, adding undesirable grain and sibilance. These artifacts will cloud transparency and homogenize images, making the music sound less realistic and organic.
