Electrocompaniet High-Fidelity Audio Systems

Made in Norway. Trusted Worldwide.

If you’re familiar with serious hi-fi, you’ve probably heard the name Electrocompaniet spoken with a bit of respect. Known for its high-current Electrocompaniet amplifiers and reference-grade components, this Norwegian brand has spent over 50 years building high-end audio systems that sound powerful, natural, and emotionally engaging.

Designed and manufactured entirely in Norway, Electrocompaniet audio equipment is used in both high-end home systems and professional studios around the world. Their gear was even part of the signal chain behind Michael Jackson’s HIStory, engineered by Bruce Swedien, proof that Electrocompaniet’s sound quality holds up at the very highest level.

What Is Electrocompaniet Known For?

Electrocompaniet is best known for its amplifiers. In particular, the brand has built a global reputation for high‑current designs that can control demanding speakers with ease while still sounding smooth, natural, and musical.

Instead of chasing exaggerated detail or harsh brightness, Electrocompaniet focuses on balance. Their sound is often described as warm but precise, powerful but refined. This is hi‑fi meant for long listening sessions, not five‑minute demos.

Key traits the brand is known for include:

• High‑current amplification that handles difficult speaker loads effortlessly

• Fully balanced circuit designs with extremely low noise and distortion

• A musical, lifelike presentation rather than an overly analytical sound

• Timeless Scandinavian industrial design

• Long product lifespans with ongoing support and upgrades

Electrocompaniet Amplifiers and Core Components

Electrocompaniet’s lineup is built around amplification first, then supported by preamps, streamers, and digital sources designed to work together seamlessly.

Some of the brand’s most respected components include:

Classic Line vs EC Living Line

Electrocompaniet currently offers two main product families, each aimed at a different type of listener.

Classic Line

The Classic Line is built for traditional high‑end stereo systems. These are full‑size components with serious power supplies, discrete circuitry, and a focus on ultimate sound quality. If you’re building a reference‑level two‑channel system, this is where Electrocompaniet truly shines.

EC Living Line

The EC Living line brings Electrocompaniet’s sound into a more compact, modern format. These products focus on wireless playback, multi‑room setups, and integrated streaming while maintaining the brand’s sonic character. It’s a cleaner, more flexible approach for contemporary homes.

FAQs About Electrocompaniet Audio Systems

Are Electrocompaniet amplifiers powerful enough for demanding speakers?

Yes. Electrocompaniet power amps like the AW 250R, AW 400, and AW 800 M deliver extremely high current, low output impedance, and damping factors over 1000. These specs make them ideal for driving large or low-impedance speaker systems with precision and control.

Do Electrocompaniet products support modern streaming services?

They do. Models like the ECI 6DX MKII and ECM 1 MKII support streaming platforms including Apple AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect, Qobuz, DLNA, Internet Radio, and Roon. The EC Software Engine ensures smooth, high-resolution playback across devices.

What’s the difference between the Classic Line and EC Living?

The Classic Line includes traditional separates like preamps, CD players, and high-powered amplifiers for reference stereo systems. EC Living is a modular, wireless line built for convenience and multi-room use, with compact form factors and built-in streaming support.

Are Electrocompaniet CD players still relevant today?

Absolutely. The EMC 1 MKV continues Electrocompaniet’s legacy of high-performance CD playback. It features a vibration-cancelling drive, dual 192 kHz/24-bit DACs, and balanced Class A analog output, making it a top-tier choice for CD collections.

Can I use Electrocompaniet with Roon?

Yes. Several Electrocompaniet models are Roon Ready, including EC Living components and DX-upgraded integrated amplifiers. This allows users to control playback across devices and stream high-resolution files with ease.

What sets Electrocompaniet's sound apart?

Electrocompaniet products use fully balanced Class A circuit designs with extremely low noise floors and distortion levels. Their sound is often described as natural, spacious, and detailed, maintaining musicality across both digital and analog formats.

Is Electrocompaniet high-end audio?

Yes. Electrocompaniet is considered a true high‑end audio manufacturer. All products are designed and built in Norway using premium components, with a focus on sound quality, longevity, and engineering integrity.

What are the three types of amplifiers?

The three main types of amplifiers are integrated amplifiers (which combine preamp and power amp), power amplifiers (which drive speakers), and preamplifiers (which control signal and volume before amplification).
